Dental Implants Guide: From Single to All On 4 Dental Implants

Guide to dental implants

Losing a tooth can affect more than the appearance of your smile. Depending on where the tooth is missing, it can influence how you eat, how your teeth function together and how confident you feel when smiling or speaking. When several or all teeth are missing, these effects can become even more noticeable.

Dental implants offer a fixed way of replacing missing teeth, but implant treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Someone missing one tooth may benefit from a single dental implant, while someone who has lost most or all of their teeth may need a more comprehensive solution, such as All On 4 dental implants.

At Manor Dental Care, we start by understanding what needs replacing and what you want to achieve. From single dental implants to full-arch solutions, treatment is carefully planned around the individual patient.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium fixture that is placed into the jawbone to act as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. Once the implant has integrated with the surrounding bone, it can provide a stable foundation for a crown, bridge or full arch of replacement teeth.

One of the advantages of dental implants is their versatility. They can be used to replace a single missing tooth, several teeth or, with treatments such as All-on-4 dental implants, an entire arch. The important part is choosing an implant solution based on what your mouth actually needs rather than simply replacing every missing tooth in the same way.

What are single dental implants?

Single dental implants are used when an individual tooth needs replacing. Rather than relying on the neighbouring teeth for support, an implant is positioned in the space left by the missing tooth. A custom-made crown is then attached to the implant to recreate the visible part of the tooth. Single dental implants may be considered following tooth loss caused by decay, injury or an extraction where the tooth could not be saved.

The aim isn’t simply to fill a gap. The position of the implant and final crown need to be carefully planned so the new tooth works with your existing teeth and bite while achieving a natural appearance.

What are All-on-4 dental implants?

All-on-4 dental implants take a different approach. They are designed for patients who need to replace a complete arch of teeth. Instead of placing an individual implant for every missing tooth, four strategically positioned dental implants are used to support a fixed bridge of replacement teeth.

For suitable patients, this can provide a stable alternative to a traditional removable denture and allows an entire upper or lower set of teeth to be supported by a relatively small number of implants.

You may also see treatments of this type described as full-arch dental implants, full-mouth dental implants or sometimes same-day teeth. However, these terms don’t necessarily describe exactly the same treatment, which is why an individual assessment is important.

Single dental implants or All-on-4 dental implants?

Although both treatments use dental implants, they’re designed to solve very different problems. A single dental implant may be appropriate when one tooth is missing but the surrounding teeth remain healthy. All-on-4 dental implants, meanwhile, may be considered when most or all of the teeth in an arch are already missing or have a poor long-term prognosis.

There are also many possibilities between the two. Several implants can support multiple individual teeth or an implant-supported bridge, for example. Before recommending treatment, we consider:

  • How many teeth are missing
  • The condition of your remaining teeth
  • Gum health
  • The amount and quality of available bone
  • Your bite and how your teeth function
  • Your general and dental health
  • What you would like your treatment to achieve

It’s about finding the appropriate solution for your mouth rather than fitting every patient into the same type of implant treatment.

How is dental implant treatment planned?

Successful implant treatment starts with careful planning. Your initial consultation allows us to assess your teeth, gums and overall oral health and discuss what you’re hoping to achieve. Digital imaging can then provide further information about the bone and surrounding structures. Depending on your individual circumstances, your treatment journey may involve:

  • Consultation and assessment – Understanding your dental health, concerns and treatment goals.
  • Digital imaging and planning – Assessing the available bone and planning where implants could be positioned.
  • Implant placement – Carefully positioning the dental implant or implants within the jaw.
  • Healing – Allowing the implants to integrate with the surrounding bone where required.
  • Restoration – Fitting the planned crown, bridge or full-arch restoration.
  • Ongoing care – Monitoring your implants and helping you maintain the surrounding teeth and gums.

Whether we’re planning single dental implants or All-on-4 dental implants, what’s happening beneath the finished smile is just as important as how it looks.

Can All-on-4 dental implants provide teeth on the same day?

This is understandably one of the biggest questions for patients considering full-arch implant treatment. In suitable cases, it may be possible to place a temporary fixed set of teeth on the same day as the implants. However, this isn’t automatically appropriate for every patient. Bone quality, the stability of the implants, your bite and other clinical factors all influence whether immediate loading is suitable.

It’s also important to understand that teeth provided at this stage are generally temporary. The definitive restoration is planned as part of the wider treatment process.

We prefer to determine what is appropriate after assessment rather than promising the same treatment timeline to everyone.

Dental implants or dentures?

Dental implants and dentures can both replace missing teeth, but they work differently.

Traditional dentures are removable, whereas implant-supported teeth use implants within the jaw for support. For some patients, that additional stability can make eating, speaking and smiling feel more secure.

That doesn’t mean everyone missing multiple teeth automatically needs All-on-4 dental implants. Modern dentures remain an appropriate option for many people, and implants can also sometimes be used to stabilise a removable denture. A consultation allows you to understand these different approaches and their advantages before deciding how you’d like to proceed.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants varies because the treatment itself varies considerably.

The cost of a single dental implant cannot realistically be compared with replacing a complete arch using All-on-4 dental implants. The number of implants, complexity of treatment, type of restoration and whether any additional procedures are required can all influence the overall cost. That’s why an accurate treatment plan and cost can only be provided following an individual assessment. When comparing dental implant treatment, it’s also worth looking beyond the initial price. Understanding what’s included in your treatment, who is providing it, how it will be planned and what ongoing care is available are all important considerations.

Our Approach To Dental Implants

At Manor Dental Care, our approach to dental implants starts with understanding the patient rather than choosing the treatment first. We consider the health of your mouth, the teeth that can be preserved, how your bite functions and what you would like your finished smile to achieve. Our implant treatment can include:

  • Single dental implants for individual missing teeth
  • Multiple dental implants
  • Implant-supported bridges
  • All-on-4 dental implants for suitable full-arch cases
  • Digital assessment and treatment planning
  • Long-term monitoring and maintenance

Ultimately, dental implant treatment isn’t simply about replacing what’s missing. It’s about planning teeth that look natural, function effectively and can be properly maintained for the future.
